Why do headlights turn yellow?

Most headlight lenses are polycarbonate plastic with a thin protective layer from the factory. Years of sun wear that layer away, and the plastic underneath oxidizes and turns cloudy or yellow.

Restoration removes the damaged surface and brings the lens back to clear. The new surface then needs protecting, or the sun starts the same process again.

It starts at $50. We confirm the price when we see the lenses, because a light haze and a deeply yellowed lens are different jobs. The quote is the price.

    Clearer at night

A cloudy lens scatters the beam. A clear one puts the light where the headlight was built to aim it.

  • 2

The front of the car looks younger

Yellowed headlights make a car look older than it is. Clear lenses change the look of the front end straight away.

Headlight Restoration FAQ

How much does headlight restoration cost?

At Get Detailed MI, headlight restoration starts at $50 at our Wayne shop. The final price depends on how cloudy or yellowed the lenses are, and we confirm it when we see them. The quote is the price.

How long does headlight restoration last?

It depends on how the lens is protected afterwards and how much sun the car sees. A restored lens left without protection can start to haze again within months. We tell you what to expect for your lenses when we quote.

Is professional headlight restoration worth it?

It is worth it when the lenses are cloudy enough to dim the light or date the car, and the plastic is not cracked. It costs far less than new headlight assemblies. If the damage is inside the lens, restoration cannot reach it, and we will tell you before we start.

Does WD-40 or toothpaste restore headlights?

They can make a lens look clearer for a short time, mostly by filling or lightly scuffing the haze. They do not remove the oxidized layer or protect the plastic, so the haze comes back. A lasting result needs the damaged surface removed and the lens protected.

Does a magic eraser clean cloudy headlights?

A melamine sponge is a mild abrasive, so it can take off some surface haze. It also leaves fine scratches and no protection, so the lens clouds again.

Can you restore headlights at my house?

No. Headlight restoration is done at our Wayne shop only. Mobile detailing covers interior and exterior work at your home or office within 15 miles.
